Judging from the above caption, this postcard must date from around 1944
when the play, Life With Father was running on Broadway in the Empire
Theatre.

How generous of the Empire to stamp and mail this post card for audience
members. Clever advertising!

Clarence Day (1874-1935), author of a set of short stories, Life With Father,
died shortly after completing them in December of 1935. They were published
posthumously in the New Yorker magazine in 1936.

Had he lived, Clarence Day would have enjoyed the phenomenal success
of these autobiographical tales about his own boyhood growing up in upper
middle-class New York City in the 1890s.

Headed by a domineering (yet lovable) father , this madcap clan of redheads
was inspiration for a play based on the stories, also entitled Life With Father.
It was brought to life for the Broadway stage in 1939 by Howard Lindsay
and Russel Crouse. Life With Father enjoyed a record-breaking run from its
1939 opening at the Empire Theatre, to its closing at the Alvin Theatre in 1947.
A Hollywood film followed in 1947, and a television version in 1954.

Day's stories poked fun at Victorian mores regarding child rearing and the
changing role of women in society during the late-19th Century. Day himself
was a champion of the suffrage movement.

Clarence Day, Jr., a quintessential New Yorker, was born there in 1874. After
his graduation from Yale, where he edited the campus humor magazine, The Yale
Record, Day returned to the City to work on Wall Street in his father's brokerage
firm. An attempt to launch a Naval career was scuttled because of chronic bouts
of arthritis, which kept him a semi-invalid for the rest of his life. Clarence Day
died in New York in 1935 at the age of 61.

The New York Public Library is home to the Clarence Day Papers, an archival
collection of his short stories, essays, and magazine columns.
Note Henson-Woodman Hardware & Stoves across the street.

Real Photo Postcards (RPPC), in popular use from around 1903 to 1930,
provided an opportunity for everyone to produce their own cards for mailing.

The photograph was taken by a special Kodak camera that could make postcards
using special postcard-sized film. The image would be developed directly from
the negative onto postcard backs. The picture postcards produced were good
quality photographs, in both matte or shiny finishes.

The blank side was divided like any commercially-made postcard, with places
for the address and the message provided. Postcard stamps in 1912 were 1¢.
The Spanish Riding School of Vienna presents a thrilling equestrian spectacle
featuring the high-stepping maneuvers of the world-famous Lipizzaner stallions.
These "Airs Above the Ground", originally used on the battlefield as defensive
postures, became the centerpiece of this fantastic equine ballet.

Victorian scraps, those charming embossed die-cut images of animals, fruit,
flowers, children, Santas, and Valentine hearts have been inspiring crafters
since the 19th-century, are still being produced today.

Scraps come in sheets connected by tabs where one can find the name of the
firm producing them, and the country of origin, often Germany or England.

When cut out individually, scraps can be put into books devoted to collections
of them (scrapbooks, if you will), or incorporated into handmade greeting cards,
or used in découpage decorating.

Here is an excellent website called Victorian Scrap Papers that displays hundreds
of these precious images, and provides links to even more.

They can't help but inspire. Happy scrapbooking!
This shuttlecock (one of four) looks as if has just landed out-of-bounds
in a giant-sized badminton game, on a lawn whose scale befits such a match.

Claes Oldenburg and his late wife Coosje van Bruggen have been turning
everyday objects into whimsical public art installations from Kansas City to
Korea for decades. Oldenburg, age 82, was on hand last Saturday to witness
the unveiling of his latest creation-- a 51-foot high paint brush, erected in
Lenfest Plaza in Philadelphia.
Salzburg... The Festival City, Mozart's hometown, and locale of The Sound of Music.

The Salzburger Festspiele starts on July 27, 2011... don't put off a visit for another
year! The festival runs until August 30, 2011.
Pat recommends two restaurants in Salzburg:

1) St. Peter Stiftskeller, the oldest restaurant in Central Europe, was established
in 803. Outdoor eating areas are amongst the ruins of the old monastery.
Full-course meals. Classy! Try a Salzburger Nockerl for dessert.

www.salzburg.info/en/gastronomy/restaurants.htm

For a Mozart Dinner Concert, the Salzburger Konzertgesellschaft performs
right at St. Peter Stiftskeller. Click on this link to their utterly charming website
for more information.

www.salzburg-concerts.com/en/salzburg/mozart-dinner-concert/home

2) Part beer garden, part food court, visit the Augustiner Braüstüberl Mülln.
Grab a beer stein, and put it under the spiggot at the beer fountain! Take your
brew and a plate of food and sit out under the trees in the Gastgarten.

The beer-related website, Prost, Mahlkeit!, "In Austria's pubs and distant lands..."
has an English translation option that can be accessed from the Google search page.
"When the first European explorers emerged from the dense northern forests of
America, they could scarcely believe their eyes. A "fruitful champayne countrie",
a treeless ocean of wildflowers, birds and animals, and grasses nine feet high,
stretched unbroken to the distant horizon. The explorers named it "prérie,"
meaning "grassland" or "grassy orchard"."
Manufacture Française D'Armes et Cycles de Saint-Etienne opened in that city
in the 1880s as purveyors of sporting goods. They were the first mail order
company in France, and distributed large catalogs annually. There were also
retail outlets throughout France and the colonies that sold things such as bicycles,
hunting rifles, fishing rods, and meubles de jardin. The company now goes by
the name of Manufrance.
These charming vintage versions of our present-day cabanas remind us that
summer has arrived! Here is an article from New Jersey Savvy Living
Magazine about the popularity of cabanas that have been appearing on the
New Jersey Shore in ever-increasing numbers.
He did many drawings of San Diego landmarks, and was featured in a

number of travel books.

The Hotel del Coronado has been the playground of presidents, potentates and

celebrities since it opened in 1888. This massive wooden structure is one of the

finest examples of a Victorian beachside resort, and was designated a U.S.

National Historic Landmark in 1977.

The "Hotel del" has been the setting for books and movies.
In 1832, at the Viennese court of Prince Metternich, a chef's apprentice was
assigned the task of creating a special dessert for some distinguished guests.
Franz Sacher, aged 16, came up with a rich chocolate cake containing a secret
ingredient: apricot jam. The dinner guests were delighted with this delicious
confection, and "Sacher Torte" became a Viennese tradition. Sacher's descendants
founded the Hotel Sacher in 1876. The hotel is in the heart of Vienna, next to the
Staatsoper, and still serves its famous Sacher Torte.

"...because all the best gifts come in brown and white boxes."

Advertising postcards have been in use since the 1870s. The idea of sending
postcards to promote a business or product is a wise marketing tool. And don't
we love to pin up a postcard from our favorite store on our bulletin boards?

www.henribendel.com

In 1895, Henri Bendel, a milliner by trade, opened his flagship store in a
then-residential neighborhood on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Bendels
has been keeping women looking their best ever since.

Bendel introduced many "firsts" to the burgeoning fashion scene in early-20th
century New York. He imported the designs of a young Coco Chanel, he
organized the first fashion show, and started a line of signature fragrances.

Famous for their hats, Bendels was immortalized in the Cole Porter song,
"You're the Top", from the 1934 Broadway musical, Anything Goes. "You're
a Bendel bonnet" is among the list of things synonymous with the best of the best.

For your listening pleasure, I have included a "postcard folio" of sorts, that
gives you a visual guide to the lyrics of the song, courtesy of Bob Toomey on
YouTube. Thanks Bob!

The Biltmore Estate is the largest privately-owned home in the United States.
Built by George Washington Vanderbilt II beginning in 1889, it was completed
in 1895. He hired Frederick Law Olmsted to design the grounds and the gardens.
Olmsted, who also designed New York's Central Park, is known as "the father of
American landscape architecture". Biltmore is located near Asheville, North Carolina.

The Festival of Flowers starts on April 2nd and runs until May 15, 2011.
